SEOUL, South Korea -- All I saw were a handful of soldiers, some barbed wire and a few sawhorse blockades. Last Sunday I went looking for the "crisis" on the Korean Peninsula, the one I keep hearing about on the TV news.

Paper or plastic? Gas or electric? Bus, train or plane? Drive 100 miles for recycled wood for my garden or buy the clear-cut local stuff? Arghhh! Not another eco-dilemma. I'm just trying to make it through the day.

POKING THE BEAST: Gone to Soldiers
An Essay in Three Parts
By Rob Wood
(rwood@get.hooked.net)
POSTED: 03-30-95
EDITOR'S NOTE -- Jon Priluck (jamcorp@world.std.com) once wrote of starting a business: "A bureaucracy is a static monster, it moves slowly and does not take action unless prodded. Don't poke the beast to see if it is awake; you have nothing to gain and everything to lose." Robert Wood was so struck by these words when he read them on FREELANCE@newshare.com that after 20 years he finally found words to describe his experience "poking the beast" of bureaucracy when he tried to turn himself in for a draft-card violation. A three-part essay.

Listening to Christians talk about alternative lifestyles
By Shelly Roberts
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- In mid-March, syndicated columnist Shelly Roberts
covered a
conference of evangelical Christians -- without revealing in advance her
status as a gay/lesbian journalist. The "Reclaiming America For Christ"
event was sponsored by the Reverend D. James Kennedy and the Coral Ridge
Presbyterian Church. This opinion piece is the result of her "undercover"
reporting.

NEW ORLEANS, La. -- It is springtime in the New Orleans French
Quarter. At Jackson Square the break dancers draw large, appreciative
crowds, as do the fire-eaters, mimes, and jugglers. Portrait painters,
artists and tarot card readers line the park's iron gates. And then there
are the mules, hitched to the traditional surreys.
